Does Redis MCP Work Offline? Local Setup Explained
Wondering about redis mcp offline? Point the server at redis://localhost:6379 and the connection stays on your machine, with no Redis Cloud involved.
For redis mcp offline use, point the server at a local Redis instance instead of Redis Cloud. The published install instructions include a configuration that targets redis://localhost:6379, so the database connection stays on your machine. The server exposes six tools: get, set, delete, list_keys, hgetall and info. A Redis Cloud setup, by contrast, depends on the internet by its nature.
Does Redis itself run offline?
The question splits in two: the database and the connector. The database is the simpler half. The configuration published for the Redis MCP server uses a localhost address, which is the address of your own machine. A Redis instance listening there does not need to reach anything outside your computer for your agent to talk to it.
That is the useful mental model. Redis is a server process, and the MCP server is a client that connects to it over a URL. If the URL points at your own machine, the two can talk to each other whether or not you have a network connection. What matters is that a Redis process is actually running and listening at the address you configured.
Plenty of developers keep a local Redis for exactly this reason: caches, queues and session data can be exercised on a laptop, on a plane or behind a locked-down network. The MCP layer does not change that, because it only sends commands such as reading a key or listing keys by pattern to whatever URL you give it.
Does the Redis MCP server work without an internet connection?
Mostly, yes, with one caveat about how it starts. The install instructions for the server show a client configuration that runs npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-redis redis://localhost:6379. The connection target is local, so once the server process is running, redis mcp offline sessions depend only on your local Redis being up. The npx launcher resolves a package by name, so confirm on your machine that the package is already available before you lose connectivity.
The same instructions list the same configuration for Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf. Only the config file path differs: ~/.claude.json for Claude Code, .cursor/mcp.json for Cursor and ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json for Windsurf. The server entry itself is identical, so a working local setup in one client transfers to the others.
Remember also that your AI client is a separate matter. If the model behind Claude Code or Cursor is hosted, the assistant still needs its own connection to reason about your requests. The offline part covers the path from the MCP server to Redis, not the model. For the general trade-offs between servers that run on your machine and hosted ones, see Local vs Remote MCP Servers: What Changes.
What breaks if Redis Cloud is used instead of local Redis?
The install page describes the server as a way to manage Redis Cloud with natural language, and it offers a direct run command, npx -y mcp-redis-cloud. Redis Cloud is a hosted service, so any setup aimed at it needs a network path to that service. Without one, commands such as get or set cannot reach your data. That is a property of hosted databases in general, not a defect of the connector.
The practical consequence is simple: pick the target before you go offline. A cloud-hosted database is reachable only while you are connected, and a local one is reachable whenever the process runs. If you need both, keep two entries in your client config with different names so you can switch on purpose rather than by accident.
A second difference is the data itself. A local instance starts with only what you put in it, so it will not mirror the keys stored in a cloud database. Treat it as a development copy. If your work involves cache behaviour across services, the Cache Invalidation Pipeline recipe shows how Redis is paired with another data source in a workflow.
How do you point the MCP at a local Redis instance?
Start a Redis instance on your machine, then add the server to your client configuration with the local URL as its last argument. In Claude Code the file is ~/.claude.json. The entry published in the install instructions looks like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"redis": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-redis", "redis://localhost:6379"]
}
}
}The steps, in order:
- Start Redis locally and confirm it is listening on the address you plan to use.
- Add the entry above to your client's config file (Claude Code, Cursor or Windsurf paths are given earlier).
- Restart the client so it loads the new server.
- Ask the agent to run
infofirst. It returns Redis server info and stats, which confirms the connection works.
Once connected, the six tools cover the basics: get reads a key, set writes one with an optional TTL, delete removes keys, list_keys matches keys by pattern using SCAN, hgetall returns all fields of a hash, and info reports stats. That is enough to run redis mcp offline for debugging and cache inspection. For a fuller walkthrough with Claude Code, read How to Use Redis MCP with Claude Code.
There is also a one-command route: the install page lists mcpizy install redis as the recommended path. Note that this command is separate from the manual config above, so check which URL ends up in your client file before assuming it points at localhost. If you also work with Supabase locally, the same reasoning is covered in Does the Supabase MCP Work Offline or Locally?
FAQ
Can I use the Redis MCP server with no network at all?
You can when the server is configured with a local URL such as redis://localhost:6379 and a Redis process is running on the same machine. The connector-to-database path then stays local. Your AI client may still need its own connection if its model is hosted, so the assistant itself is a separate dependency from Redis.
Which tools does the server offer?
The install page lists six: get, set, delete, list_keys, hgetall and info. The set tool accepts an optional TTL through its ex input, and list_keys uses SCAN to match a pattern. The official page does not state a price, so check the vendor's own documentation before assuming cost.
Should I choose local Redis or Redis Cloud?
Choose local Redis for development, debugging and anything that has to work without a connection. Choose Redis Cloud when you want the MCP server to manage a hosted database, which is what the install page describes. Nothing stops you from keeping both entries in your config under different names, as long as you know which one the agent is calling.
